This is what I call 'a quiet' novel. Things certainly happen but the central character, a young British lieutenant in New South Wales is also a scientist. For him life is explained through careful observation, methodical recording and a rational approach. For his friend and fellow officer, a burgeoning writer, observations come to life through the 'colour' and extravagance of words.
The main part of the story is set around the daily process of developing relationships with the indigenous people, trying to understand their language and their culture. Ultimately there is a sense of redemption through the lasting nature of 'the book' which records new ideas and exploration of others.
Although it is slowly paced the novel provides ideas and notions of relationships which last after it is finished.

This review reminds me of a similar story - but I must now hunt through the shelves to find it as my hopeless memory can't recall the title for you.
