by Peter Carey
On the Man Booker shortlist but not sure I would have placed it so highly. Carey has won the Booker twice before, so perhaps that accounts for it.
That said, it was a good old-fashioned adventure story set in the time of the French REvolution and ending up in the New World of America, via Britain with a touch of Australia tossed in. It was funny, complex without becoming confusing, richly entertaining with some lavish historical reference tossed in to enrich the superb story - okay, maybe it did deserve to be short-listed.
